About Us

Back in 2010, a group of people in Kelowna, BC had heard of a course being taught in Vancouver on "Digital Storytelling". They invited that instructor to give the course in Kelowna. The course was about creating better photography slideshows. They learned that a group had been formed in Vancouver originally from the students of that course who met regularly to improve their skills by reviewing shows and sharing inspiration and tutorials.

Realizing that no one improves without practice, the Kelowna group decided to create a sister group, and "DigiFlickers" was born. They meet to screen shows and get feedback and inspiration from each other. They continue to improve their technical skills by sharing what they learned about the latest releases in software.

Our members are amateur (some almost pro) photographers with varying amounts of experience. We come together in an interest to take our imagery to a new level of presentation, we seek to tell stories with our images, and to engage our audiences both emotionally and intellectually, be they family, friends, or even the general public. We are open to using every form of media available to us, not limiting ourselves to just a static single frame, we look at various treatments of photographs, including video and audio production techniques.

How do we improve? To help us practice, we gather from time to time sharing shows with each other for feedback. Members who learn new tricks, or have other information to share also present at our meetings.

Through show reviews we help members learn to look for the "story" in a setting and take into consideration that the types of shots one does for "artsy" photography are often not enough to tell the whole story.

Our members are spread far and wide (most in British Columbia and Alberta), so our meetings are usually held on Skype. Members post their shows to this site prior to meetings so the shows can be reviewed. It's like a "book club" for slideshows!
